Stephen Colbert Set for New Late Night Gig on CBS

Stephen Colbert is leaving his current late-night home after CBS canceled “The Late Show” next year, but he won’t be going far. He’s reportedly guest starring in the police procedural drama “Elsbeth,” a spinoff of “The Good Wife” and “The Good Fight.” In this new role, Colbert will host a fictional show called “Way Late with Scotty Bristol.”

Although CBS claimed the “Late Show” cancellation was due to financial reasons, production for “Elsbeth” had already begun in New York, suggesting the guest appearance was planned before the network’s announcement. Colbert previously expressed interest in appearing on “Elsbeth,” even proposing a humorous concept where he could play a corpse.

The show is set to premiere its third season on October 12, and star Wendell Pierce has confirmed that Colbert’s episode will be a reality. Despite CBS’s denial of politics playing a role in the cancellation, Colbert’s new gig may raise questions about the network’s motives.
