Plant-Based Diet May Reduce Chronic Disease Risk

A recent study published in the Molecular Nutrition and Food Research journal found a link between a healthy plant-based diet and reduced risk of inflammatory bowel diseases, such as colitis and Crohn’s disease. The study, which included 143,434 participants from the United Kingdom, showed that those who followed a balanced plant-based diet had an 8% lower risk of ulcerative colitis and a 14% lower risk of Crohn’s disease after an average of 14.5 years.

The results were largely attributed to the anti-inflammatory properties of fruits and vegetables, which are rich in gut-healthy nutrients. According to Zhe Shen, corresponding author of the study, “Our research indicates that a healthy plant-based diet may protect against inflammatory bowel disease, with its anti-inflammatory properties playing a key role.”

This finding complements previous research suggesting that vegan diets can promote weight loss and reduce dietary acid load. A plant-based diet is also considered an eco-friendly choice, producing 75% fewer greenhouse gases than animal-based diets.

Many celebrities have adopted plant-based lifestyles, and there are numerous resources available for those interested in trying out more plant-based foods or learning about a plant-based lifestyle.
