China Unveils World’s First Neuromorphic Brain-Like Computer Capable of Advanced Thinking Abilities
China has unveiled a groundbreaking brain-like computer called Darwin Monkey, which mimics the workings of a macaque monkey’s brain. This system supports over 2 billion pulsed neurons and more than 100 billion synapses, making it the world’s first neuromorphic brain-like computer to combine advanced thinking abilities with vision, hearing, language, and learning functions.
Developed by the State Key Laboratory of Brain-Machine Intelligence at Zhejiang University, Darwin Monkey is equipped with 960 Darwin 3 neuromorphic computing chips. The system can run intelligent applications, including the DeepSeek brain-like large model, to perform tasks such as logical reasoning, content generation, and mathematical problem-solving.
The chip array supports more than 2 billion pulsed neurons and hundreds of millions of synapses, making it a powerful tool for brain science research. According to reports, the system can preliminarily simulate animal brains of varying neuron sizes, including those of elegans, zebrafish, mice, and macaques.
Darwin Monkey is not only significant for its advanced thinking abilities but also for its ability to learn and adapt online. The system relies on specialized brain-inspired computing instruction sets and neuromorphic online learning mechanisms.
