New Study Suggests 7,000 Steps Per Day for Better Health Outcomes

A new study published in the Lancet Public Health suggests that aiming for 7,000 steps per day may be more effective than the traditional goal of 10,000 steps. The research analyzed data from 57 studies involving over 160,000 adults and found a significant reduction in health risks associated with walking only 7,000 steps per day.

According to the study, this daily target can lead to reduced risk of death from any cause (47% decrease), cardiovascular disease (25%), cancer (6%), Type 2 diabetes (14%), dementia (38%), depression (22%), and falls (28%). Even a lower goal of 2,000 steps per day shows promise in improving health outcomes.

Experts emphasize that every bit of exercise counts, and incorporating physical activity into daily life is crucial. Dr. Theodore Strange, chairman of medicine at Staten Island University Hospital, recommends setting aside a specific time for daily walks, making it a lifestyle choice rather than a chore.

Tips from Dr. Strange include:

* Park further away in parking lots
* Take the stairs instead of elevators when possible
* Walk to nearby stores instead of driving

By making these small changes and aiming for 7,000 steps per day, individuals can significantly improve their health and incorporate physical activity into their daily routine.
