Deadly Bacteria Cases Rise on Gulf Coast

A summer outbreak of deadly Vibrio vulnificus bacteria is affecting Gulf Coast states, with Louisiana reporting 17 cases so far this year, four fatal. The state’s health department notes that cases have increased significantly, from an average of seven annually over the past decade.

Vibrio vulnificus can infect people who swim in warm coastal waters or eat undercooked seafood, particularly oysters. According to Dr. Alok Patel, “This bacteria is rare but deadly.” Florida has confirmed 13 cases and four deaths this year.

In Louisiana, most cases (75%) involve individuals with open wounds who swam in coastal waters. Symptoms include fever, swelling, and gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. Health officials warn of the dangers of Vibrio vulnificus and urge caution when enjoying summer activities along the Gulf Coast.
