Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has been in the media spotlight throughout the ongoing NFL season. Although he interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons in January and didn’t appear to draw significant interest, his regular appearances on ESPN’s “ManningCast” and “Inside the NFL” have kept him relatively connected to football.
Recently, Belichick confirmed talks with the North Carolina Tar Heels about their head coaching vacancy during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show”. While it remains unclear if he will coach at UNC next season, Bruce Arians, a former NFL coach, chimed in on the situation. Arians expressed surprise that Belichick is interested in coaching at the collegiate level and offered advice.
Arians advised Belichick to be patient when dealing with rookies and freshmen, citing the significant changes in name, image, and likeness (NIL) rules and the transfer portal. Belichick’s approach to building a college program would focus on creating a pipeline for NFL-ready players, emphasizing professional training, nutrition, scheme, coaching, and techniques that can translate to the league.
The 72-year-old coaches’ careers have been marked by success in both the NFL and collegiate ranks. If Belichick were to coach at UNC or another program, he would need to navigate these changing landscape rules.
