Regan Smith led the way off the block, touching in 57.57 to give the US the initial lead. Kaylee McKeown of Australia responded with a strong backstroke leg, but the US maintained its pace throughout the relay.

Gretchen Walsh, another US standout, swam an impressive breaststroke leg, and Torri Huske anchored the team to their new world record mark. The team’s total time of 3:49.34 broke the previous world record by 0.23 seconds.

Australia took silver with a time of 3:52.67, while China finished third in 3:54.77. Germany and Japan rounded out the top five, narrowly missing their national records.

The US team’s performance was marked by strong individual swims from Smith, Douglass, Walsh, and Huske. The relay victory marked the fifth consecutive meet where Regan Smith has led her team to a win on the leadoff leg of the medley relay.

Smith’s backstroke leg of 57.57 tied with her 2019 World Championships record. The US team’s new world record time set the stage for an exciting conclusion to the championships in Singapore.
