The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a Class II national recall for 64,800 pounds of Bunge North America’s NH European Style Butter Blend after discovering undeclared milk. The recall affects 1,800 cases of the product, each containing 36 blocks of butter blend packaged in white paperboard cases.
Bunge North America, based in Missouri, voluntarily recalled the product due to its potential to cause severe allergic reactions, particularly among children and individuals with milk allergies. Milk is one of nine major allergens that must be declared on food labels under US law. Failure to disclose milk content can lead to anaphylaxis, a life-threatening condition.
The FDA’s Class II classification indicates that the product may cause temporary or medically reversible health consequences, although the risk of severe or life-threatening outcomes is considered remote. The recall affects distribution centers across the United States and one in the Dominican Republic.
Bunge North America produces multiple food ingredients, including corn, wheat, rice, soybeans, and feed peas. The particular butter blend is primarily used by food manufacturers, rather than sold directly to consumers. According to an expert warning, milk allergies pose a significant risk, particularly among children, who may experience symptoms ranging from vomiting and hives to life-threatening respiratory issues.
The FDA’s recall of Bunge North America’s NH European Style Butter Blend serves as a reminder of the importance of declaring allergens on food labels and the potential consequences of failing to do so.
