The United States has topped the swimming medal table at the World Aquatics Championships, overcoming an initial slow start due to an outbreak of gastroenteritis affecting several swimmers. The team won nine gold medals and 29 total medals, surpassing Australia’s eight gold and 20 total medals.
After a disappointing start with only five gold medals in the first six days, the US team staged a late surge to win four more gold medals on Sunday. Katie Ledecky’s championship-record time in the women’s 800m freestyle and Kate Douglass’s record-breaking performance in the women’s 200m breaststroke were key highlights.
Summer McIntosh, an 18-year-old Canadian sensation, won her fourth gold medal of the week with a championship-record time in the women’s 400m individual medley. She is now tied with Katie Ledecky as the only women to have won four individual golds at a world championships.
