Apple Expands Siri Capabilities with AI-Powered Search Experience

Apple is hiring engineers for an “Answers, Knowledge, and Information” team focused on improving its virtual assistant, Siri, as well as search capabilities in Safari and Spotlight. Over a dozen job listings have been posted across the US and China, including positions for Machine Learning Engineers to develop large language models.

The team’s goal is to enhance Siri’s ability to answer personal domain questions using users’ own documents while prioritizing privacy. This echoes Apple’s plans to delay its personalized Siri features until 2026.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the team is exploring a “new ChatGPT-like search experience” and considering a standalone app for this functionality. They are also building an “answer engine” that can crawl the web to respond to general-knowledge questions.

This project builds upon previous reports of Apple’s development of a more conversational Siri version, which was delayed until at least iOS 27. The new AI-powered search experience seems to be a step further, with ambitions to create a ChatGPT-like interface for users.
