Measles Outbreak Hits New Jersey, Residents Warned

The New Jersey Department of Health has issued a warning to residents after a person with measles visited the emergency department at Chilton Medical Center in Morris County. Those who visited between July 31 and August 1 may have been exposed to the highly contagious virus.

Symptoms can appear up to two weeks after exposure, and infected individuals can spread the virus through coughing, sneezing, or even being in close proximity to others. Pregnant women are at risk of miscarriage or low birth weight.

The state has reported six measles cases so far this year, with one recent case involving a resident who developed the illness after international travel. Residents are advised to call their doctor before visiting any facility to take necessary precautions.

According to the CDC, there have been 1,333 confirmed measles cases in the US as of July 29. The public health department stressed that people with symptoms or exposure should consult their doctor immediately.
