Mohammed al-Bashir has taken over as Syria’s caretaker prime minister until March 2025. He previously headed a rebel-led administration in northwestern Syria and administered the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham-led government in Idlib Province.
Al-Bashir, an electrical engineering graduate, was born in 1983 in Jabal al-Zawiya, Idlib province. Before becoming interim prime minister, he held various roles, including a management job at the state-owned Syrian Gas Company and served as minister of development for Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.
His appointment comes after the Islamist rebel alliance toppled the Assad regime, and he is expected to face significant challenges in maintaining security, stability, and the country’s institutional structure. The interim administration aims to avoid power vacuum and ensure continuity, a goal also shared by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.
Al-Bashir’s past and his transition from supporting rebels to leading an administration are unclear. However, he gained experience governing Idlib Province before taking over as prime minister. His appointment marks a new phase in Syria’s ongoing civil war, which has divided the country for 13 years.
