US Swimmers End Championships with Record-Breaking Win

The US women’s swimming team ended the world championships on a high note, setting a new world record in the 4×100 medley relay. The team swam a time of 3 minutes and 49.34 seconds, breaking their own previous mark of 3:49.63.

Regan Smith, Kate Douglas, Gretchen Walsh, and Torri Huske made up the winning team, with Huske taking on the anchor leg. The US team finished with nine gold medals and 29 overall, ahead of Australia with eight golds and 20 points.

Summer McIntosh won four individual gold medals for Canada, while Leon Marchand of France took home two individual gold medals. McIntosh closed her championships with a victory in the 400-meter individual medley, winning by over seven seconds. She became the second woman to win four individual golds at a world championships.

Marchand also won the 400 IM, finishing just off his own world record. The US team’s performance was marked by improvement as swimmers’ health seemed to recover from a bout of “acute gastroenteritis” picked up at a training camp in Thailand.

American Bobby Finke took bronze in the men’s 1500 meters event, saying he’s proud of the US team despite criticism from former swimmers Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte. The US team ended the championships with a strong finish, setting a stage for future success, including the 2028 LA Olympics.
