Sun Owners Sell Team for $325 Million to Boston Investor Group

The Connecticut Sun’s sale is now official after a deal was reached with a Boston-based investor group. The team will relocate to Mohegan Sun Arena in 2027, pending WNBA Board of Governors approval. President Jennifer Rizzotti confirmed the news on Sunday, citing positive fan reactions and expressing excitement for the team’s future.

The buyer, led by Steve Pagliuca, a minority owner of the NBA’s Boston Celtics, has agreed to contribute $100 million for a practice facility. The sale price is a record for women’s sports franchises, totaling $325 million. Rizzotti praised the Mohegan Tribe, who have invested decades in the WNBA, citing their on-court success and loyal fan base.

The relocation plan aims to increase capacity arenas in New England. However, some uncertainty remains as the WNBA Board of Governors must approve the sale. The league may force the Mohegan Tribe to sell to a Connecticut-based buyer instead. Despite this, Rizzotti believes that Boston offers more opportunities for the team and its players, with many expressing preference for playing in larger markets.

The Sun’s new ownership group is expected to prioritize growing the WNBA in New England, significantly benefiting the league and its fans. The sale will bring a new era to the franchise, with fans eagerly awaiting next season’s start date, now set for August 2026.
