Amazon Lays Off 110 Wondery Staffers Amid Audio Division Restructuring

Amazon is reorganizing its audio division by laying off about 110 employees from its Wondery podcasting unit, a move aimed at streamlining operations and improving performance. The company has notified those affected employees this morning.

As part of the restructuring, Wondery CEO Jen Sargent will step down from her role. Amazon’s vice president of audio, Steve Boom, announced the changes in a memo to staffers, stating that the goal is to create the right structure for delivering the best experience to creators, customers, and advertisers.

Boom explained that the company is consolidating some Wondery units under its Audible audiobook and podcasting division. The narrative podcasting unit will be combined with Audible, while creator-led content will move to a new unit within Boom’s organization called “creator services”.

Amazon faces increased competition from video podcasts on YouTube, which requires different strategies for discovery, growth, and monetization. The company acknowledged the evolving landscape of the podcast industry.

The restructuring comes nearly five years after Amazon acquired Wondery as part of its push into original audio content.
