7 Desk Mistakes that Damage Knee Joints, Expert Reveals

As National Bone and Joint Day is observed in India on August 4, employees in desk-bound roles are advised to take proactive measures to protect their musculoskeletal health. Dr Amyn Rajani, Consultant Knee, Shoulder & Hip Surgeon, stresses the importance of being active at work, both at home and office.

Prolonged sitting has become a norm in today’s digital age, affecting musculoskeletal health. Young professionals are suffering from back pain, neck stiffness, vitamin D deficiency, and early-onset knee pain due to sedentary lifestyles. To avoid these issues, Dr Rajani shares seven mistakes to avoid:

1. Sitting for long hours without movement can stiffen muscles and joints.
2. Poor posture at the workstation puts undue stress on the spine.
3. Ignoring desk exercises can lead to muscular tension and stiffness.
4. Vitamin D deficiency is widespread due to limited sunlight exposure in office environments.
5. Wearing the wrong footwear can alter posture and lead to knee or back problems.
6. Neglecting a diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, and protein can compromise bone health.
7. Skipping regular exercise can exacerbate joint issues.

To mitigate these risks, Dr Rajani advises incorporating 50 steps every hour, standing up and stretching at least seven times during an 8-hour workday, trying desk yoga or seated stretches, getting vitamin D levels tested regularly, wearing supportive shoes, eating a balanced diet, and exercising for at least 25 to 30 minutes daily.
