OpenAI is updating its chatbot service, ChatGPT, to encourage healthier usage and avoid unintended consequences. The changes include a new feature that reminds users to take breaks during prolonged sessions, similar to those used by video streaming services and social networks.
Starting today, users of ChatGPT will receive gentle reminders during long sessions to encourage them to step away and rest. This is the first phase of OpenAI’s efforts to measure user engagement in terms of return visits rather than session duration.
In addition to the break reminder feature, OpenAI has made changes to its response strategy to reduce the likelihood of users seeking absolute answers to life-or-death questions. The company aims to provide prompts that guide users to think critically about complex issues instead of relying on a single answer.
OpenAI collaborated with over 90 physicians across 30 countries to develop custom rubrics for evaluating multi-turn conversations, and is convening an advisory group of experts to further improve ChatGPT’s usage guidelines. These changes are designed to promote healthier interactions with the chatbot while minimizing potential risks or negative consequences.
