Paramount Television Studios is making a comeback under new leadership with Dana Goldberg at the helm. As Co-Chair of Paramount Pictures and Chair of Paramount Television, Goldberg will oversee the studio’s newly formed unit, which will absorb Skydance Television and Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios. Former Netflix executive Matt Thunell has been appointed as head of Paramount TV Studios, while former Paramount Global co-CEO Chris McCarthy is leaving once the merger is completed.
Goldberg’s team will focus on streaming-focused content, with Sheridan’s Taylor Sheridan universe expected to be based at the new studio. Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios’ head of scripted content Keith Cox is also expected to transition to the new label. The division will oversee TV production entities differently, with oversight split between Goldberg and George Cheeks.
The move aims to return Paramount TV Studios to its roots, launched in 2013 by Brad Grey and Amy Powell. The new studio will likely take over existing projects based on Paramount film IP that had migrated from PTVS to CBS Studios. Discussions are underway about where the different pieces would land, with Goldberg and Cheeks currently in talks.
The return of Paramount TV Studios comes as part of Skydance Media’s acquisition of Paramount Global. The new combined company will focus on building a stronger library and marketing efforts to compete with streaming giants like HBO MAX.
