Nintendo is conducting a survey to gather feedback from its community about physical and digital games on the Switch. The survey includes questions about which format users prefer for purchasing games (physical or digital) and why they might consider buying physical versions. This comes after Nintendo shifted its strategy towards predominantly game-key cards, similar to cartridges, which require a digital download followed by insertion into the console.
The move has raised concerns about game preservation and ownership due to its dependence on Nintendo’s servers and support. Many have criticized this shift, including Stephen Kick, CEO of remaster specialist Nightdive Studios, who called it “a little disheartening” due to his expectations for better preservation practices from a company with a rich history.
Now, the community has an opportunity to voice its opinions directly through Nintendo’s survey. The survey includes questions about Switch game purchases, sales, and preferences regarding physical versus digital games. Users can share their thoughts on why they might prefer or avoid physical copies, including concerns about collecting and gifting games, as well as a sense of ownership.
The recent Nintendo Direct showcased the lack of physical media, with some dubbing it the “Key-Card Direct”. However, with this survey, Nintendo is now seeking direct feedback from its community. The company has also reported strong sales for the Switch 2 console and announced price increases for the original Switch consoles in the US.
Users can participate in the survey by visiting a link provided on Nintendo’s website.
