South Korea has begun removing loudspeakers along its border with North Korea, a move aimed at easing tensions between the two countries. The decision was made by the South Korean military, which stated that it would not affect its readiness.
The loudspeakers, which were used to broadcast music and news across the border, had been in place since the previous administration. However, they were removed after North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un complained that they were “psychologically detrimental” to people near the border.
Despite this, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has continued to push for improved relations with Pyongyang. In a statement, Kim Yo Jong, Kim Jong Un’s sister and a key advisor, said that the two countries had already moved beyond the concept of compatriotism, which is often seen as a way to describe ties between North and South Korea.
The removal of the loudspeakers marks a significant step forward in efforts to reduce tensions between Seoul and Pyongyang. However, it remains unclear whether this move will be met with any concessions from the North Korean leadership.
