Buffalo Bills running back James Cook did not participate in Monday’s training camp practice for the second consecutive day, as he continues to seek a contract extension. Cook, who is in his final year of his rookie deal, was seen briefly at practice but only wore workout gear and a beanie.
Bills general manager Brandon Beane said they were caught off guard by Cook’s absence, which happened just hours before the team took to the field on Sunday. “We never had a player miss due to a contract,” Beane stated. However, he also acknowledged that negotiations can be difficult and that both sides need to agree on terms.
Cook’s agent has not commented on the situation. The Bills have extended contracts for three other 2022 draft class members this offseason, including CB Christian Benford, LB Terrel Bernard, and WR Khalil Shakir. Running backs Ty Johnson and Ray Davis expressed respect for Cook’s decision, saying he is trying to do what’s best for himself.
The Bills will resume practice on Wednesday at St. John Fisher University after an off day on Tuesday.
