WNBA Blocks Boston Team Relocation Amid League Expansion Plans

The WNBA’s decision to block the relocation of the Connecticut Sun to Boston has left many questioning the league’s priorities and smart business decisions. The Mohegan Tribe had agreed to sell its team to Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca, who planned to move the team to Boston despite the Sun being in a weaker market.

The WNBA claimed that relocation decisions are made by the Board of Governors, but their statement seemed like a public relations attempt to cover up a potentially poor decision. The league’s stance on Boston applying for an expansion team during the recent cycle was illogical, as it would have created competition between the Sun and any future Boston franchise.

A smart owner should have recognized that relocating the Sun is the best course of action to grow the fan base while keeping current supporters in Worcester, Providence, and Eastern Massachusetts. The Celtics sale was ongoing, leaving many unanswered questions about potential partnerships or facility usage.

The WNBA’s reported preference for saving Boston as a potential expansion city in 2033 raises more questions than answers. If greed is driving their decision, Pagliuca should reconsider his interest and Mohegan Tribe may be justified in suing the league over lost revenue opportunities.
