The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced it will send refunds to Fortnite players who were tricked into making unwanted purchases on the popular online game. The FTC settled a complaint with Epic Games, the developer of Fortnite, last year over accusations of misleading players.
Fortnite players in the US who filed a claim by October 8 will receive payments through a check or PayPal. Those who missed the deadline can still apply for refunds until January 2025. Players must be at least 18 years old to submit a claim, and parents can complete forms on behalf of children under 18.
The first round of refunds amounts to $72 million, but the FTC plans to release more payments in the future. The total amount of refunds is expected to be around $173 million after all claims are processed.
Epic Games agreed to pay $520 million in penalties and refunds last year to settle allegations that it tricked players into making unwanted purchases. The company was accused of using a counterintuitive button configuration, making it easy for children to make purchases without parental consent, and locking accounts of customers who disputed charges.
