Denver International Airport’s South Security checkpoint is closing permanently on Tuesday, marking one step in the airport’s efforts to improve security efficiency. The terminal will be replaced with two high-tech checkpoints, West Security and East Security, which can handle more passengers per hour.
The new checkpoints offer a significant improvement over the old ones, with each lane capable of handling up to 250 people per hour compared to 150 for older lanes. As a result, wait times are expected to decrease substantially.
South Security’s average wait time was around 11.5 minutes, but after the upgrade, passengers can expect even shorter lines. The TSA PreCheck lanes at South Security will remain open intermittently until September.
The closure is part of the airport’s ongoing transformation, with other changes already implemented in recent months. A bridge that connected to Concourse A is reopening as a walkway, allowing travelers to access the concourse without going through security first.
The upgrades are part of a larger plan to complete the Great Hall project, which could last until 2027. The former South Security space will be transformed into a unique area called the “Living Room,” featuring comfortable seating and dining options, as well as new art installations.
