Apple is planning to introduce tandem-structure OLED panels to its iPhone lineup within the next two years, according to reports from The Elec. This technology, currently exclusive to Apple’s M4 iPad Pro models, aims to provide improved brightness, power efficiency, and longevity.
The tandem OLED displays use two layers of RGB organic light-emitting diodes stacked together. However, unlike current single-layer iPhone OLEDs, the new technology would only stack blue sub-pixels, with red and green pixels on a single layer.
LG Display has proposed this “simplified tandem” method to Apple, which it believes is superior due to its technological advancements. LG’s production of tandem OLED panels for Apple’s iPad Pro models has surpassed Samsung’s, while their automotive OLEDs also use the two-stack structure.
However, Apple is likely to diversify its supply chain by relying on multiple suppliers to ensure production capacity and maintain price competitiveness. China’s BOE may also be involved in producing these displays. As with all future plans, this announcement is subject to change.
