The Perseid meteor shower, one of summer’s most spectacular events, has begun and is expected to peak on August 12-13. This annual spectacle will continue until around August 23, providing optimal viewing conditions for skywatchers.
Host a “star party” with friends or enjoy solo stargazing as the Perseids bring bright fireballs and colorful explosions of light into view. The meteors typically appear in the dark sky before dawn but can also be seen as early as 10 pm.
According to NASA, the Perseid meteor shower is notable for its long “wakes” of light and color behind each streaking meteor. With approximately 50-100 meteors per hour, it’s one of the most prolific showers.
The origins of this spectacle lie in the debris trail of Comet Swift-Tuttle, with fireballs originating from larger pieces of these comet leftovers. Witnessing the Perseid meteor shower is an opportunity to marvel at nature’s fireworks display.
