Microsoft may require employees to return to the office more frequently, starting as early as January, according to people familiar with the plans. The shift aims to align with increased performance demands in the tech industry. Under the new policy, most employees could be required to work in the office at least three days a week.
This move would bring Microsoft closer to its Big Tech rivals, such as Amazon and AT&T, which have implemented stricter remote work policies. Meta and Google also generally require their employees to work from offices three days a week.
The decision comes amid increased pressure on employees to perform better. In September, Microsoft’s cloud and AI boss Scott Guthrie said the company would not change its flexible work policy unless productivity drops noticeably. Microsoft has since fired thousands of low-performing employees and introduced a new performance improvement plan.
CEO Satya Nadella has emphasized the need for “dedication, drive, and hard work” in the upcoming year. The move may seem counterintuitive, given that Microsoft sells software to enable remote work and has promoted hybrid work as a way to reduce costs and boost productivity. However, the company is still finalizing details and has not yet made an official announcement.
