The New York Yankees have demoted struggling right-hander Jake Bird to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, just days after acquiring him from the Colorado Rockies. Bird’s demotion comes after a disastrous three-game stretch in Miami where he surrendered four earned runs and had a 27.00 ERA in three appearances.
The move is seen as an effort by the team to bring in a fresh arm from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, following a dismal performance by all three newly acquired relievers, including Bird, David Bednar, and Camilo Doval. The bullpen has struggled with a 5.03 ERA since June 13, ranking as the fifth-highest mark in the majors.
The Yankees are currently tied for second place in the American League wild-card standings, 2.5 games behind the Boston Red Sox. With an 18-28 record since June 13, they are also in third place in the American League East, 5.5 games behind the leading Toronto Blue Jays. The loss to the Rangers on Monday night was particularly devastating, with a walk-off home run and a bullpen that failed to hold a lead.
