Counting Drinks May Help Reduce Alcohol Consumption

Researchers have found a simple yet effective way to encourage people to drink less alcohol: highlighting the increased risk of cancer and pairing it with counting each drink. A 2021 study showed that this combination of “why” and “how” messaging resulted in drinkers reducing their alcohol intake. By linking booze and cancer, along with suggesting individuals keep track of their drinks, the most effective approach saw participants cut down on their consumption over a six-week period. This method may be useful for promoting good health in populations, particularly those who are unaware that alcohol is a carcinogen. With limited resources for alcohol harm-reduction campaigns, finding effective messaging is crucial, and this study suggests counting drinks could be one option to try.
