Get Vaccinated Now to Avoid Holiday Illnesses

The holiday season is upon us, but so is the peak flu and COVID-19 season. Experts warn that now is the time to get vaccinated, especially if you have party plans coming up.

According to Dr. Michelle Fiscus, chief medical officer of the Association of Immunization Managers, getting a vaccine typically takes about two weeks to take effect. “It’s crucial to get your updated COVID and annual flu vaccines before holiday parties start,” she said.

A national survey reveals that many Americans are not concerned about these illnesses and don’t plan to get vaccinated. Concerns over side effects and trust issues with vaccines contribute to vaccine fatigue. However, Dr. Fiscus suggests viewing vaccines as a protective measure like wearing a seatbelt.

“You wouldn’t stop wearing your seatbelt because you’re tired of it,” she explained. “It’s the same for vaccines. Even if you’ve had multiple shots, continue getting vaccinated to stay safe.”

Additionally, staying up-to-date on the latest vaccines can help protect vulnerable populations, such as elderly relatives and those with weakened immune systems.
