Award-winning environmental journalist Alec Luhn, 38, who worked for the New York Times and the Atlantic, has gone missing while on a solo hike in Norway’s Folgefonna national park. He was last seen trying to catch a flight from Bergen but failed to appear.
Luhn, who is experienced in mountain walking and well-equipped, was on a four-day hike with his sister before setting out alone on July 31st. A 30-strong volunteer search and rescue team, including dogs and drones, were deployed after the operation was suspended due to bad weather.
The police said they had to pull out some rescuers to ensure their safety as the weather deteriorated further. Luhn’s wife, Veronika Silchenko, a fellow journalist, has appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
Luhn is specialising in climate journalism and was based in Moscow, Istanbul, and now lives in the UK. He won several awards, including two Emmy nominations, and was part of the Pulitzer Center Ocean Reporting Network. The search for him will continue into the evening as a priority for safety reasons.
