The US Department of Agriculture has found an unusual way to scare away wolves from killing cattle and livestock – by using audio from an Oscar-nominated drama film, “Marriage Story”. The film’s argument scenes are being used in combination with drones equipped with thermal cameras and loudspeakers broadcasting startling sounds.
In Oregon’s Klamath Basin, a drone program was introduced last year after 11 cows were killed by wolves over a 20-day period. Since then, only two more have been lost to the wolves when the drones were on patrol for 85 days. The film’s audio is just one of several unusual sounds being used in the program, which also includes AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” and Five Finger Death Punch’s “Blue on Black”.
However, some ranchers are skeptical about the effectiveness of the strategy, with one saying they wonder how long it will take for the wolves to get used to the noises. The USDA is hoping that the program will be successful in protecting livestock from wolf attacks.
