The Denver Department of Public Health and Environment is warning residents about the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses after an unnamed person tested positive for West Nile virus. The department advises people over 60 and those with compromised immune systems to take extra precautions.
In Jefferson County, three people have tested positive for West Nile this summer, while eleven cases have been reported in Colorado so far. Five of these cases developed neurologic symptoms, and three required hospital care. One person from Lafayette died from the virus.
Residents can reduce their risk by taking simple steps: ensuring window screens are secure, wearing protective clothing, applying insect repellent, and avoiding outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours. They can also help control mosquito populations by eliminating standing water sources and moving sprinklers away from sidewalks.
