Russia’s troops are likely still stationed at their key bases in Syria, with signs of a withdrawal being easy to spot. A senior analyst told the Financial Times that an evacuation would be difficult to hide, citing satellite images and military deployment patterns.
The Russian military is still present at its two major facilities in Syria – Tartus naval base and Khmeimim Air Base – which provide crucial access to the Mediterranean and Africa. However, Russia claims it’s trying to work out a deal with the new Syrian government.
Analysts say an evacuation would be obvious, as satellite images show that Russian warships have vacated Tartus since Monday but not performed a full withdrawal. The Kremlin has stated it wants to maintain its access to these bases.
However, there is uncertainty about Russia’s future in Syria due to the complex post-Assad government landscape. Rebel forces are splintered and factions vie for power. The US still lists one prominent rebel leader as a terrorist with a $10 million bounty on his head.
Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War believe Russia may be delaying a total evacuation to negotiate a deal with the new government and ensure security for its personnel in Syria.
