Trump Creates Taskforce to Oversee 2028 LA Olympics

US President Donald Trump has announced the creation of a White House taskforce to oversee elements of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The taskforce will be led by Trump and include JD Vance as vice-chair, with an executive director overseeing daily operations.

The move comes despite tensions between the federal government and local authorities in Los Angeles. The city has been engaged in high-stakes negotiations over the use of city staff for the Games, while a proposed ballot measure could require Olympic venues to receive voter approval.

Trump’s announcement is seen as a demonstration of his strong support for the LA Olympics, which are expected to attract millions of people over 16 days. However, the move has also highlighted Trump’s contentious relationship with regional leaders, including Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.

The taskforce will focus on security and transportation for the Games, as well as streamlining visa processing and credentialing for participants and media. The White House has also pledged to use every tool at its disposal to ensure a safe Olympics.

Despite the challenges facing LA, including devastating wildfires and strained finances, city officials remain committed to hosting the Games. The creation of the taskforce is seen as a positive development for the event, with Casey Wasserman, chair and president of LA28, praising Trump’s support and describing the taskforce as an opportunity to “level up” planning for the Games.
