US Steps Up Humanitarian Aid to Gaza Amid Tensions with Israel

US President Donald Trump and special envoy Steve Witkoff discussed plans to significantly increase US humanitarian aid to Gaza during a meeting at the White House on Monday evening. The move comes as negotiations for a ceasefire are stalled, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is considering expanding the war in Gaza.

The US will take over management of humanitarian efforts in Gaza due to Israel’s inadequate handling of the issue, according to a US official. Gulf countries like Qatar and Jordan are expected to contribute funds, while Egypt will also be involved. The White House has declined to comment on the matter.

Trump is not thrilled about the idea of the US taking charge but believes it is necessary to address the worsening starvation crisis in Gaza. He wants to ensure mothers can nurse their children and prevent babies from starving.

The administration plans to carefully avoid getting drawn into the Gaza crisis, tasking Witkoff and others to encourage other countries, including European friends and Arab nations, to contribute to the effort.

Israel supports the increased US role, with Netanyahu agreeing that it will help improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza. However, some in the administration are concerned about Netanyahu’s proposed expansion of the war, which would involve occupying the entire Gaza Strip.

The Israeli security cabinet is expected to meet on Thursday and approve a plan for full occupation of Gaza, which could undermine Trump’s efforts to increase aid. Despite this, the US plans to provide new humanitarian aid to areas outside combat zones in an effort to alleviate the crisis.
