Superhero Box Office in Shambles as Summer Loses Steam

The highly anticipated superhero film “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is struggling to maintain its top spot on the North American charts, facing stiff competition from Disney’s comedy sequel “Freakier Friday” and Zach Cregger’s thriller “Weapons.” Despite earning $200 million domestically and $370 million worldwide, the movie’s box office performance hasn’t met Marvel Studios’ expectations. With projections suggesting “Freakier Friday” may open to $27-30 million, it could overtake “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” in its third weekend. Meanwhile, Warner Bros.’ “Weapons,” starring Josh Brolin and Julia Garner, is also expected to debut strongly with a production budget of $38 million. The summer box office has seen a 9.5% increase compared to last year but remains 23% behind pre-pandemic levels in 2019.
