Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx has revealed harrowing details about his debilitating stroke and arduous road to recovery in his new Netflix special, “What Had Happened Was.” The comedian and singer shares a personal account of how he fought for his life after being hit with a bad headache on April 11, 2023. He underwent surgery but doesn’t remember the following 20 days.
Foxx’s “mystery illness” led to a cortisone shot and further medical care, which included a brain bleed that led to a near-death experience. He was told he may not make a full recovery but it would be the worst year of his life.
During his recovery, Foxx struggled with physical and mental therapy but eventually found solace in humor. He made jokes with nurses and visitors, telling himself “if I can stay funny, I can stay alive.” The comedian also leans into his comedy roots, performing impressions and referencing allegations against Sean Combs.
Foxx credits his family for holding him down during this scary moment in his life. His sister and daughter helped keep him out of the public eye while he was recovering. However, when his younger daughter played her guitar for him, his vitals improved, and he found solace in spirituality.
While Foxx addresses his stroke and recovery, some details remain unclear, including what caused the event in the first place. Despite this, “What Had Happened Was” has already been nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television category.
