Cleveland Guardians pitcher Gavin Williams has thrown a no-hitter through eight innings against the New York Mets. This marks the longest drought without a no-hitter in the majors for the Guardians, who last achieved this feat on May 15, 1981.
Williams has walked three batters and struck out five throughout his performance. He has also showcased exceptional fielding skills, snagging two hard-hit balls, including a Francisco Lindor comebacker and a Pete Alonso liner.
Despite having never thrown a complete game as a professional, Williams reached his career-high in pitches with 111, surpassing the previous record of 109 set on May 26 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Guardians’ bullpen was active during the sixth inning, adding to the tension.
The team’s longest no-hitter drought has ended, and they have now won three consecutive games. However, their American League Central standings remain unchanged, with a 59-55 record and a 6-game deficit to the first-place Detroit Tigers.
