China Battles Chikungunya Outbreak with Mosquito Warfare Measures

China is taking drastic measures to combat a chikungunya outbreak, which has claimed over 7,000 cases. The virus, spread by mosquitoes, causes fever and joint pain, making the young, elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions most vulnerable.

Authorities are using a multi-pronged approach to prevent further spread of the disease. These measures include:

– Mosquito nets
– Clouds of disinfectant
– Fines for people who fail to empty standing water containers
– Drones deployed to hunt insect breeding grounds

The U.S. has issued a travel advisory, warning citizens against visiting affected areas in China and other countries such as Bolivia and Brazil.

Heavy rains and high temperatures have exacerbated the situation, but authorities are determined to eliminate the outbreak. Patients are being required to stay in hospital for at least a week, while a two-week home quarantine was briefly enforced before being dropped due to the virus’s inability to be transmitted between people.

Even unconventional methods, such as fish that eat mosquito larvae and larger mosquitoes, have been explored to curb the spread of the disease. Meetings have been held, and protocols adopted at the national level, showcasing China’s resolve to tackle the outbreak without facing public or international criticism.
