A man who vanished in a Pakistani glacier 28 years ago has been found, providing shocking evidence of climate change’s impact on glaciers. Naseeruddin’s body was discovered intact by a shepherd in the Lady Valley, with his clothing still intact.
The discovery was made possible due to the accelerated melting of glaciers in Pakistan’s Kohistan region, which has been affected by decreased snowfall in recent years. Climate experts say this shows how global warming is accelerating glacial melt.
Locals provided crucial information after police confirmed Naseeruddin’s identity through his ID card. The man was traveling with his brother when he fell into a glacier during a snowstorm. Police later revealed that the family feud, which forced the brothers to leave their home, was a contributing factor to Naseeruddin’s disappearance.
The remarkable preservation of the body is attributed to the extreme cold and lack of moisture in the glacier, which mummified it. Climate scientist Prof Muhammad Bilal explained that when a human body falls into a glacier, it freezes quickly due to low temperatures, preventing decomposition.
