The New York Mets suffered a tough 4-1 loss to the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday afternoon, marking their eighth loss in nine games. The team is now 2.5 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies. Despite a solid performance from pitcher David Peterson, the lineup failed to deliver, with many weak contact attempts and missed opportunities.
Guardians starter Gavin Williams dominated, carrying a no-hitter through 8.1 innings and striking out six Mets. However, manager Carlos Mendoza credited his team for giving Williams credit, but also acknowledged that they are better than their performance today.
The Mets finally managed to get on the board in the ninth inning with Juan Soto’s solo home run in straight-away center. Nevertheless, it was too late to overcome the deficit. Soto expressed frustration over the team’s recent struggles, stating that they have the talent and capability to turn things around.
Manager Mendoza remains confident in his team but emphasized the need for improvement. He stressed the importance of finding a way to break their current losing streak and making adjustments to come out on top. The Mets will face an even tougher challenge in their upcoming three-game series against the Brewers, who have the best record in baseball.
