A helicopter carrying government ministers and crew crashed in Ghana’s interior on Wednesday, killing all eight on board. The aircraft took off from the capital Accra and was heading northwest when it went off radar.
Ghana’s Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed were among those killed, along with a National Democratic Congress party official, a top national security adviser, and three crew members.
The cause of the crash is not yet known, but an investigation has been launched. The helicopter was a Z-9 model, commonly used for transport and medical evacuation.
This is one of Ghana’s worst air disasters in over a decade, following previous incidents including a 2014 service helicopter crash that killed at least three people and a 2012 cargo plane accident that killed 10 passengers.
