Bosnia’s electoral authorities have stripped separatist Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik of his post as president of the Serb entity in Bosnia, Republika Srpska. The move comes after an appeals court verdict sentenced him to one year in jail and banned him from all political activity for six years.
The decision follows a Sarajevo court ruling in February that found Dodik guilty of failing to comply with rulings by the international envoy overseeing Bosnia’s 1995 peace accords, which ended the war in the region. The Bosnian Serb government had rejected this ruling as “politically motivated.”
Dodik has faced international criticism for his pro-Russian stance and calls for the separation of the Serb entity from Bosnia. The European Union has urged respect for the court’s verdict, while the US has imposed sanctions on him and his allies.
The Bosnian Serb president had vowed to continue his duties despite being removed from office, with lawyers planning to take the case to the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina. An early election is expected to be called within 90 days.
The move marks a significant development in Bosnia’s efforts to consolidate its institutions and stability after years of conflict.
