Lin-Manuel Miranda Announces ‘Hamilton’ Movie Release in Theaters

Lin-Manuel Miranda revealed on Tuesday’s episode of “The Tonight Show” that the movie version of his Tony Award-winning musical “Hamilton” will hit theaters nationwide and in Puerto Rico on September 5. The film, a live capture of the original Broadway production, was initially scheduled for release on Disney+ but due to the pandemic, it was released on streaming instead.

The movie follows most of the original cast performing in 2016 at The Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway. Tickets are now on sale for the film’s U.S., Canadian, and Puerto Rican releases, with additional countries following later this year. The musical has won numerous awards, including 11 Tonys and a Pulitzer Prize.

Rights to the “Hamilton” movie sold for $75 million in a deal brokered by Endeavor Content on behalf of Miranda. A special premiere screening event will take place at the Delacorte Theater on September 3, with limited advance tickets available for donation or through a ticket lottery distribution. The film’s director-producer, Thomas Kail, expressed excitement about audiences experiencing the show on the big screen, saying they wanted to capture the feeling of being in the Richard Rodgers Theatre during its first year on Broadway.
