Apple CEO Tim Cook announced plans to spend about $600 billion over four years in the United States, amid growing tensions with President Donald Trump over tariffs. However, experts say the move is more of an update to Apple’s existing strategy rather than a major concession.
The announcement was made at the White House, where Cook appeared alongside Trump to discuss American manufacturing. While Apple didn’t commit to making iPhones in the US, Cook highlighted the company’s efforts to produce parts domestically, including glass and facial recognition sensors.
Apple’s commitment includes expanding partnerships with US suppliers such as Corning, Coherent, and Texas Instruments, while also investing in new data centers for artificial intelligence. The company aims to create 450,000 jobs at its suppliers by working with US companies.
However, experts question the impact of this investment on Apple’s bottom line, citing that much of it may be regular expenses rather than additional production costs. Analysts say the move is more about appeasing Trump and avoiding tariffs rather than a significant shift in Apple’s manufacturing strategy.
