US President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 100% tariff on imports of semiconductors and chips, but exempt companies that are “building in the United States”. The move aims to pressure businesses to manufacture their products domestically. However, details about the plan, including the required level of US manufacturing, remain unclear.
Trump made the announcement after promoting Apple’s commitment to invest $100 billion in the US over four years, on top of its existing pledge of $500 billion. Several major chipmakers, including Taiwan Semiconductor, Nvidia, and GlobalFoundries, have already pledged to set up manufacturing facilities in the US.
