Framework’s Modular Laptops vs Unique Desktop Design

Framework, known for its modular and upgradeable laptops, has ventured into the desktop market with a unique product that raises questions about its design choices. The company’s flagship product, the laptop series, has garnered attention for its flexibility and modularity, features that have drawn customers to desktop PCs for decades.

However, Framework’s desktop PC, despite its interesting design touches, lacks the upgradeability and modularity of standard self-built desktops. This shift in focus makes it difficult to understand the need for such a product. The Framework Desktop is not just an innovative design but also poses a question about the value customers place on mini PCs with limited upgrade options.

The DIY Edition Framework Desktop arrived compact, fitting within a standard mini ITX build case. Despite its size, it can accommodate powerful GPUs like the GeForce RTX 5090. While three desktops of this size could fit in the space left by a larger system, the design’s overall functionality remains unclear due to its reduced upgradeability and modularity compared to traditional desktop PCs.
