Families of Israeli captives held in Gaza gathered outside the country’s military headquarters on Wednesday, demanding that the government not proceed with its plan to occupy the besieged enclave. The families’ protest turned violent as police clashed with demonstrators.
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum expressed their urgency, stating that “time is running out” for the release of their loved ones. They warned that if action was not taken immediately, they would lose their relatives forever. The forum’s statement echoed a message to Israeli army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, urging him to bring an end to the war and negotiate a deal that secures everyone’s freedom.
The families’ criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has intensified in recent months, with large protests taking place across the country. Netanyahu’s plan for Gaza is opposed by both domestic and international leaders, including his own military establishment.
Some 50 captives remain in Gaza, with an estimated 20 believed to still be alive. The ongoing conflict has resulted in at least 61,158 Palestinian deaths and 151,442 injuries.
The protests are part of a broader anti-war movement, with activists from the Standing Together grassroots organization attempting to reach the Gaza border despite police restrictions. A protester was arrested during the demonstration, while others scattered flour on police forces as a form of protest.
