Wildfires in southern Greece have resulted in one fatality and widespread destruction. The fire in Keratea, near Athens, spread rapidly, destroying homes and prompting evacuation alerts. Authorities confirmed that the body of an elderly man was found inside his home.
More than 50 agricultural and forest fires broke out across Greece in the past 24 hours, with winds fanning flames and making firefighting efforts challenging. Emergency messages were sent to thousands of residents to leave affected areas, and police helped with evacuations, removing at least 10 people who refused to leave their homes.
Seven areas have been evacuated, including Synterina, Dimolaki, and the settlement of Ari, which has been severely affected. The fire is “extremely difficult” to contain, stretching over seven kilometres. Authorities warn that if it is not contained soon, it could grow even larger.
A team of 190 firefighters, supported by aircraft and helicopters, are battling the flames. Fire crews from other countries have also joined the effort. Another large wildfire broke out in western Greece, with regional authorities deploying resources to tackle the blaze.
Fire officials say the greatest danger comes from embers carried by the wind, which are igniting multiple spot fires. Authorities urge residents in affected areas to remain vigilant and take precautions to avoid further outbreaks. The risk of further wildfires remains severe in southern Greece.
